Hi everyone,

I've slowly been posting my latest Advanced Step videos. This is Combo 1. I'll post the next combo soon!

This particular combo was one of my favorites in a long time! I thought the breakdown was logical and actually fairly simple for an advanced routine. Much of the syncopation is optional.

Enjoy!

Dana

Music Anyone?

Just a quick post to let you know about 2 Step mixes my buddies over at 32mix and I have collaborated on. I selected the songs, and Tyler provided the engineering for these 2 mixes, and I am out of this world happy with these 2 mixes! If you enjoy the music I use in my YouTube videos, then you'll like these 2 mixes. Check out Elite 123 and Elite 124 at www.32mix.com. They have lots of other song styles to choose from, too.

Rock on!

Now Accepting Registrations for October Workshops in Virginia

I am now accepting registrations for my weekend of workshops in October. These workshops are being held at my "home" gym -- LifeTime Fitness in Centreville, Virginia -- on October 23-24, 2010.

Saturday's workshop will be a detailed workshop that covers all aspects of teaching Step, from safety, to cueing, to creating interesting 32-count choreography, and finally a detailed session on breakdowns!

Sunday's session presents a method I created that enables me to create new choreography and its corresponding breakdown extremely quickly -- who doesn't like that idea??? While it is not mandatory, I do recommend that you take the Saturday workshop prior to taking this workshop to ensure you have a firm grasp on my breakdown method.

I'm still offering these workshops at my low introductory rate. To read more details about these workshops, or to register, please visit my website at: www.stepjunkie.com. Feel free to spread the word to anyone who teaches Step, or who wants to teach it! I will be happy to email you a flyer if you are interested in sharing it with others.

Thanks!!

Advanced Step, August 27, Combo 2

Hello to all!

Here is combo 2 of my recent Advanced Step class. The breakdown on this combo was really very easy. The hardest part is the reverse knee over the step, because people aren't sure which direction to exit the step. I just pointed, and reminded them that the "Crossover Cha-cha" went to the same side of the as it had been before we did the knee going over.

Enjoy!

Dana

Choreography:

Chasse Over, Box home (6)
2 Heel Taps (2)
Reverse Knee Over (4)
Cross-cha-cha to Home (4)
Syncopated Stomps (4)
Tap Wide (4)
L-Step (8) *any variation... Also, any 3-Knee Repeater will work here.

More Advanced Step for You!

I finally found some time to tape a new Advanced class. My Advanced Step classes consist these days of 3 32-count combos. This is Combo 1 of 3. I particularly like the "V-Slide Ball-Change Stomp" move -- it just feels nice on the feet. The "twists" can be replaced by any other 4-count lead-changing move, such as Mamb0 Cha-cha, Knee (or any lever) lifts, etc. You could even replace each twist with a different 4-count lead-changing move for more variety. Enjoy!

Choreography:
V-Slide, Ball-change Stomp (6)
Step-Kick on the Floor (2)
Walk back 3 and Ball-Change into (4)
Cut the Corner (4)
Twist x2 on the front side (8)
Drag (3)
Tango (5)

More Great News!

I was notified yesterday by AFAA that they have also approved both of my workshops for AFAA CEUs. Step Junkie's Secrets for Teaching Step will provide 6.5 AFAA CEUs, and Step Junkie's Time-Saving Secrets will provide 3.25 AFAA CEUs. I'm very excited and happy to have this segment of my business completed, and am looking forward to providing workshops and meeting some new friends!

My first workshop is already in the works! More info on that in a week or so when things are completely finalized. For those who have written to me, I will be getting back to you in the very near future! ... and Thank You!!

Great News!!

I am very happy to announce that I have had my first TWO Step training workshops approved by ACE for continuing education credits!!! I'm working on setting up a new website where folks can go to register for workshops, and in the future check out some videos and (I hope) some DVDs.

My first workshop, "Step Junkie's Secrets For Teaching Step," has been approved for .7 ACE CECs. It is a full-day workshop that will teach new and experienced instructors everything they need to know about teaching step, including:

Cueing
Discussion of Tap-Free Step
Using Music to Enhance your Class
Safety
Creating Lead-Changing Choreography in 32-count Blocks
Breakdowns
How to Keep Choreography Fresh and Interesting
How to Cope with Problems During Class

My second workshop, "Step Junkie's Time-Saving Secrets," is a half-day workshop and has been approved for .3 ACE credits. This workshop will present a method that I created to help me save time when I'm creating a new Step routine. One of the biggest complaints I hear about teaching Step is that "it is so time-consuming to create a new class!" So, this method cuts down the time it takes to create that routine and its corresponding breakdown -- by as much as HALF or even more!

Both workshops can have Master Classes at the end, if the host gym is interested, that will demonstrate the techniques presented in the workshop. The beauty of this is that by attending both workshops -- optimally held on consecutive days of one weekend -- you could earn a year's worth of ACE CECs in one weekend!

The AFAA approvals for both workshops are pending, but I hope to receive approval by mid-August. It you think your gym would be interested in hosting a workshop, please send me an email (a link to my email is located on my profile page). Workshops will require approximately 8-10 weeks lead time in order to give people enough time to register and for me to make travel arrangements, if travel is necessary.

I'm very excited about this new venture in my life, and to getting out and helping Step instructors save time and energy and be able to deliver even better classes to their participants!

Intermediate Step, Combo 2, June 19, 2010

Can you tell I've been busy? Finally I'm getting Combo 2 embedded here for you, with the choreography notes.

I have a question for you. Do you ever look at my breakdowns and think, "What? How did she get from the last layer to this one???" while scratching your head and frantically trying to figure out what my twisted Step-infused brain had been thinking? If you ever think this, please let me know, and I'll give you my thought process. Yes, a free glimpse into what makes me tick! Every layer in my breakdowns have a purpose -- they are either providing the next logical step in the journey to the final choreography, or they are providing a change that is needed for the next logical step in the progression to occur.

Anyhow, here's Combo 2. Combo 3 and the complete Step class coming soon!

Dana

Choreography:

Hold-Chasse over (3)
Pivot (3)
Stomp 1/2 around the world (6)
V-Slide & walk/spin to the front side (6)
Shuffle, Rock forward, & straddle (6)
Revolving Door (8)

*Simpler option for the first 12 counts: Stomps all the way around the step (as shown in the video at the beginning of the breakdown).

The six count moves that make up the majority of this routine can make the breakdown tricky. I opted to teach the end of the combo first because that is where the lead change occurs (in the Shuffle, Rock & Straddle). Remember, when you're working with moves that are between 4 and 8 counts (but not EXACTLY 4 or 8 counts), or between 8 and 16 counts (but not EXACTLY), etc., you want to be working with choreography that involves more counts than is used by your moves. Since I was working with two 6-count moves, which is 12 counts, I knew I needed to work with choreography that was 16 counts. You always want to be working WITH the music, so you simply use the next longer musical phrase...8, 16, 24, or 32 counts. Use 8 counts of music to break down moves that contain anything less than 8 counts..... Use 16 counts of music to break down moves that contain less than 16 counts, etc. You simply fill in the leftover counts with a filler move (a very easy move) that you later eliminate from the choreography when you no longer need any filler. The closer your number of counts in your choreography to the number of beats of music, then you may need to go even higher with the number of beats of music (example: if you have a 7-count move, you can't break it down using 8 counts of music because your filler would need to be only 1 count of music.... not very logical) -- so I typically will work in a 16-count chunk of choreography for a 7-count move). In the video, my filler move was a Mambo. Later in the breakdown, rather than eliminate my mambo, I doubled it, -- which worked out beautifully for 2 reasons: first, because the class was already used to doing a Mambo at that point in the choreography, so doing 2 was simple, and because 2 Mambos was an acceptable starting point for my Revolving Door. Clear as mud?

Intermediate Step, Combo 1, June 19, 2010

Are you ready for some more Intermediate Step? This is combo 1 of a routine I just finished teaching at my gym. I kept it longer than usual because my participants really enjoyed it, and also because it has some more advanced aspects (i.e., syncopation and cross-phrased moves), and I wanted to give them more time to work with it and really master it. I hope you enjoy this.

Dana

Choreography:

Up & stomp in front, Box cha-cha (8)
Stomp & Stall across (6)
Rock 3 on the floor & stomp (6)
Scissor Over (4)
Knee on the Floor (4)
Cut the Corner (4)

Making Baby Steps

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd share with you a bit of news. I've been slowly taking steps towards being able to provide continuing education workshops to instructors who want to learn how to teach Step or to provide smoother breakdowns for their classes. I have submitted paperwork to my state to set up my own company, under which I'll do my workshops, and once that is all in place, I'll be submitting my workshops for approval through ACE and AFAA.

The notes and handouts for my first workshop are basically complete. It's a comprehensive workshop to help instructors learn to teach Step and do breakdowns the way that I do them. It involves a full day of instruction, including a practical session and a master class, and I'm hoping it will be approved for a large number of CEUs/CECs. I'll keep you posted on that. Future workshops may include time-saving methods for creating choreography and breakdowns, and a workshop on teaching syncopation.

I also hope to soon offer a website where you can see choreography videos, communicate with me, and shop for choreography DVDs. Many of these tasks, unfortunately, require me to wait until my business license is completely set up, so there's the delay. Well, that... and TIME! I never seem to have enough time for everything I want to do.

I hope to have my first workshops in the Northern Virginia, Maryland, Washington, DC, and North Carolina areas. If you live in these areas and might be interested in having your gym host a workshop, please email me. A link to my email is located on my profile page of my blog. My best guess at this time is that I should be all set for doing workshops by the September or October time frame. We'll need several weeks advanced notice anyhow to provide people enough time to sign up.

As always, I love to hear from you. If you have questions, comments, or ideas for workshop topics, please share them with me!

Advanced Step, May 14, 2010

Hi Everyone!

I'm a bit behind in my postings. Sorry about that! This is an Advanced Step combination with breakdown. What I found interesting about this combination is that while there isn't any off-beat moves, I still consider this to be an advanced routine, based on the swivel on top and the syncopation. The breakdown is fairly straightforward, too. Enjoy!

Dana

Choreography Notes:

Swing Repeater (4)
Step back & Swivel (4)
Box on the floor (4)
Knee Lift Over (4)
Stomp & Walk back/forward (8)
Cut the corner (4)
Pivot (4)

Another Intermediate Combo for you, May 7, 2010

Can you believe I'm back already? I have produced another intermediate Step combination, with its breakdown. The choreography notes are posted below the video. I had a lot of fun with this combo because of all the variations that are possible from the 4 squats. While I didn't say so on the video, the easiest, and least taxing, version of the 4 squats is the very first one I show, where all 4 squats are done at the home side, with no popping over to the front, and no jumping flips. This combo may not look like it, but it is a butt-kicker.... especially if you do the options with the flips.

Advanced Step video coming next!

Enjoy!
Dana

Choreography:

4 Squats (any option) (8)
Repeater knee (8) - also any option you want can go here, not just the one I show.
Chasse with Rock back, x2 (8)
1 Knee & Walk back/forward (8)

Intermediate Step Combo, 1 May 2010

It's been a little while since I've posted any videos, mainly because I've been overwhelmed with work and family things, but also because I've been dealing with an assortment of injuries. Last Saturday I was feeling like I needed a Step "fix" because I'd taken off some time to rest and go out of town, so I set up my step outside and taped 3 combos. This is the first one. I'm venturing into the realm of high-def video, so I hope it will play for you. Choreography notes are shown below.

Choreography:

Hangover Hamstrings (4)
Rock back (2)
Abduct & cross on top, exit (5)
Rebound (5)
L-Step (8)
Diagonal, Box, Cha-cha (8)

One more intermediate routine, plus one advanced coming soon!!!

Enjoy!

Advanced Step, 3/14/2010, Final Product!

All right. Now we get to the good stuff! Here is how the 3 combos get pulled together.

After breaking down all of the combos, practice them on the right and left leads. Then weave them together as taught. While weaving, be sure to tell the class which moves are the "filler" moves (see choreography notes below). When you think they are ready, start from the top and take out the filler moves, jumping directly to the next combo's first move. This condenses the routine down from 96 counts to 64.

I love this way of teaching Advanced Step because when you take out the filler, and assuming you've double checked approach angles and how many counts each move takes, your final run throughs have a completely different feel because once you hit Combo 2, the moves are now occurring on different beats of the musical phrase from the way the class has practiced them so far in class. It's almost like doing a completely different routine, except that everyone is familiar with all the moves. And, everything feels much faster, even though it really isn't.

So, here's the final choreography:

"1-3-7" (10)
Knee-ball-change over, x2 (6)
Reverse up, Rock back, ball-change-kick (8)

Hamstring, x2 (4) -- filler move
Up & Switch feet on top, exit into tango (9)
Double stomp & spin into a straddle (5)
Drag & Pivot (6)
Stomp Across, box (8)

1 Basic (4) -- filler move
Kick & Rock (5)
Up-up, HOLD, Double switch on top & exit (7)

4-knee repeater, x2 (20) -- filler move

Have fun with it!

Advanced Step, 3/14/2010, Combo 3

And, here is Combo 3 of this step class. I'm sure everyone noticed that I put the same background picture on the videos that form one class.

Now, on this video, more than half of it is two 4-knee repeaters. I know, I know... it doesn't feel very "advanced" when there is that much easy stuff in it. Just trust me. You'll see why in the final video.

Combo 3:
Kick & Rock (5)
Up-up, HOLD, Double switch on top, exit (7)
4-knee repeater, x2 (20)

Enjoy!!

Advanced Step, 3/14/2010, Combo 2

Here is Combo 2. Just like in Combo 1, the breakdown is shown in the video.

Combo 2:
Up & Switch on top, exit into Tango (9)
Double Stomp & spin into a Straddle (5)
Drag & Pivot (6)
Stomp Across, Box (8)
Basic (4)

There are several versions of the "stomp across, box" shown in the breakdown. You can use any of them, including keeping the stomp at the end instead of the box.

Have fun with this one!

Advanced Step, 3/14/2010, Combo 1

Okay, so let's get on with some videos! This is combo 1 of 3, Advanced Step. The breakdown is shown in the video, and the final choreography is as follows:

Combo 1:
"1-3-7" (10)
Knee-ball-Change over, x2 (6)
Reverse up, Rock back, Ball-Change Kick (8)
Hamstring curls, x2 (8)

One Step Closer - Pun Intended!

Hi everyone!

I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted on my blog. After this, I have some videos to post, along with the choreography.

But first, I wanted to say that I've taken one more step towards my goal of being able to provide workshops to other Step instructors. In January, I passed my ACE certification test!!! Yea! and Phew! I've been working on developing the content of the workshop, and hope to be able to get started with providing CECs and CEUs for ACE and AFAA very soon.

The first workshop I've put together is to provide a way to make the whole process of planning a class and its breakdown a whole lot faster and easier. This workshop would be for people who already teach Step. I'm also considering a very basic class that is just "how to teach Step", which would be for people who want to learn to teach Step.

If you have any comments, please send me an email, or place a comment on this entry. I'm sorry to say that I had to turn on "comment moderation" again, because some folks started posting some links to ... well, let's just say... non-fitness-type websites. You get my drift... So, fear not, I will post any legitimate comments, but they won't appear until I moderate them.

Combo 2 of Intermediate Vertical Step of 1/1/2010

Ready for Combo 2? As in Combo 1, I'm providing you my breakdown notes. If you have questions, please feel free to email me (an email link is on my profile) and I'll get back to you.

Combo 2:

Choreography:

Kick, Stomp & Walk/Spin to the other side (8)

Side Lunge, x2 (8)
"1 & 6" (8)
Abduct Chasse over, Rock back & Pivot (8)

Breakdown:

Repeater Kick (8) + 2 Basics (8)
Kick Repeater 2 (4) + March 4 (4) + 2 Basics (8)
1 Kick + 1 Stomp (4) + March 4 (4) + 2 Basics (8)
1 Kick + 1 Stomp (4) + Walk around to other side (4) + 2 Basics (8)
Kick, Stomp, & Walk around (8) + Split Basic (8)
Kick, Stomp & Walk around (8) + Split Basic (8) + 4 Basics (16)

(*Note: I add on the 4 Basics at the end before changing the Split Basic because this enables me to change the Split Basic in the NEXT layer, while the class continues to do what they already know, and they can see how the moves have changed from what they are doing, and then they can do it with me the next time.)

Kick, Stomp & Walk around (8) + 2 Side lunges and exit opposite side (8) + 3 Basics (12) + Basic Over (4)
Kick, Stomp & Walk around (8) + 2 side lunges (8) + Double stomp/Single Stomp (8) + 1 Basic + Basic Over (4)

(*Note: On the Double Stomp/Single Stomp, as you practice this, count the beats for the class to show them how the Double stomp starts on Count 1 and the Single Stomp occurs on Count 6. These are the critical counts for the "1 & 6" move.)

Kick, Stomp & Walk around (8) + 2 side lunges (8) + Single Stomp, March, & Single Stomp (8) + 1 Basic (4) + Basic Over (4)
Kick, Stomp & Walk around + 2 side lunges + Stomp-Spin-Stomp (called "1 & 6") (8) + 1 Basic (4) + Basic Over (4)

Now. The final move in this combo is fairly tricky, so I teach it separately, and then after the class knows the move, I substitute it into the choreography where we previously did the "1 Basic (4) + Basic Over (4).

I teach this move first to the front of the class, so that the class can see me. Once they have mastered the move while facing the front, then I change the breakdown around so that they are doing the move facing the back of the room, which is how they will be doing the move in the final choreography.

2 Basics (4) + Repeater Knee (8)
1 Stomp and then march for 7 + Repeater Knee (8)
Drag & march 7 (8) + Repeater (8)
Abduct Chasse over (3) + March 5 (5) + Repeater (8)
Abduct Chasse over (3) + Rock back & Pivot (5) + Repeater (8)

Now switch it around:
Repeater (8) + Abduct chasse, Rock back & Pivot (8)

Assemble from the top:
Kick, Stomp & walk/spin to other side (8) + side lunges (8) + "1 & 6" + Abduct chasse, Rock back & Pivot (8)

Intermediate Vertical Step, 1/1/2010

Finally! It's time for some new videos for the new year! I thought that this time I would provide you my breakdown notes for this routine. I know, I know... it's really hard to decipher someone else's choreography notes.... but I am hoping that if you follow along with the video, it will all make some type of sense. Please keep in mind that I film my videos without notes, and so there may be small variations in the breakdown from what is presented below.

As you read through my notes, the boldfaced elements are what has changed since the last layer. All other elements remain the same, including staying on the same beats and on the same leg as the previous layer.

So, with that said, let's work on the first combo!

Combo 1:

Final Choreography:

3 Hamstrings on top (6)
Walk/Spin to the Opposite Side (4)
Alternating Stomps (6)
1 Knee Walk Back (8)
Cut the Corner, x2 (8)
Rebound & Stomp (8)
Tick-Tock Straddle, Drag (8)
Charleston Kicks (8)
Split Basic

Breakdown:

4-Hamstring Repeater (10) + Alternating Stomps (6)
3-Hamstring Repeater (6) + March 4 (4) + Alternating Stomps (6)
3 Alternating Hamstrings on top (6) + March 4 (4) + Alternating Stomps (6)
3 Hams on top (6) + Walk/Spin to the other side (4) + Alternating Stomps (6)
3 Hams on top + Walk around + Alternating Stomps + Single Knees x2 (8) + 2 Basics (8)
3 Hams on top + Walk around + Alternating Stomps + 1 Knee on the step, 1 Knee on the floor (8) + 2 Basics (8)
3 Hams on top + Walk around + Alt Stomps + 1 Knee & Walk back, 1 Knee & Walk up (8) + 2 Basics (8)
3 Hams on top + Walk around + Alt Stomps + 1 Knee Walk back/Up (8) + Revolving Door (8)
3 Hams on top + Walk around + Alt Stomps + 1 Knee Walk back/up + Cut the Corner x2 (8)

So, there is the first 32 counts. Since my first combo is 64 counts, we start fresh with the next 16 counts:

Repeater Knee (8) + 2 Basics (8)
Repeater 2 + 1 Stomp (8) + 2 Basics (8)
Rebound + 1 Stomp (8) + 2 Basics (8)
Rebound + Stomp (8) + Double Stomp (5) + Single Stomp (3)
Rebound + Stomp (8) + Double Stomp Straddle (5) + Drag (3)

(*Note in the video, I hold this move at the front so that the class can see what I'm doing. This is different than I would do this in a horizontal step class because in horizontal the class could see it. )

Rebound + Stomp + Tick-Tock Straddle (5) + Drag (3)

The above 16 counts changes lead leg, and so does the next 16 counts, so I teach them independently, then I put them together after both halves have been learned. So, here's the last 16 counts of combo 1:

Kick Repeater (8) + 2 Basics (8)
Charleston Kick (8) + 2 Basics (8)
Charleston Kick (8) + Split Basic (8)

Assemble parts already learned: Rebound & Stomp (8) + Tick-Tock Straddle, Drag (8) + Charleston (8) + Split Basic (8)

This doesn't change lead, so I then return to the beginning of the combo and repeat, repeat, repeat the entire 64 counts. This gives everyone a chance to remember the beginning of the combo, and it provides practice time for the final 32 counts that were just learned.
